Ed Helms is in the house — or rather, he’s in the studio. The Office Ladies podcast studio!
On the September 7 episode of Office Ladies, Stitcher’s The Office rewatch podcast hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, the BFFs and former costars chatted with Helms about his time on the show and the Season 7 episode, “Andy’s Play.”
“Andy’s Play” finds Andy (Helms) starring in a community theater production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In addition to revealing the episode was approved (and beloved!) by Sondheim himself and the production cost The Office $100,000, the trio shared that Helms’ character Andy almost sang a classic 90s hit in the episode, but sadly the show couldn’t get the rights.
Fans may recall at the end of the episode Darryl starts playing Macy Gray’s “I Try” on the piano, and Andy belts a delightful rendition of the hit 1999 single. It’s a touching Office music moment, but line producer Randy Cordray told Fischer that they originally tried to secure the rights to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic for that scene.
“That rings a bell. Yeah,” Helms said.
“[Cordray] said you even had to go into a studio and record it. And he has, like, the only recording,” Fischer told Helms. “We haven’t heard it, but he said there is this impassioned version of you singing ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ And then they couldn’t get the rights to it and they had to change it.”
“I vaguely remember that, but I don’t remember recording it,” Helms said. “But man, I want to hear that.”
Same. And guess what? I did, because Fischer and Kinsey came through and played the recording at the end of the podcast episode. In true Nard Dog fashion, it slaps.
In the end, The Office spent $25,000 to get the rights to “I Try.” But Kinsey revealed the shooting draft for the episode included a third song option for Andy to sing. “This is what it says on the shooting draft,” Kinsey explains. “Darryl starts to play ‘I Would Do Anything For Love‘ by Meat Loaf.’”
Now that we’ve heard Helms belt “I Try” and “My Heart Will Go On,” we’re going to need him to drop a Meat Loaf cover as ASAP as possible.
Be sure to listen to the full episode of Office Ladies for more behind-the-scenes stories about “Andy’s Play,” and of course, to hear Ed Helms sing “My Heart Will Go On.”
