Wheeling resident Lois Lewis’ dog Coco, at left, visits with another canine at the new Wheeling Park Dog Park on Thursday evening. The park is located behind the White Palace.
Those looking for another place to let their dog run happy and free may want to check out the new Wheeling Park Dog Park.
The park is situated behind the Wheeling Park White Palace. It includes two fenced-in areas – one for smaller dogs weighing 30 pounds or less, and another for larger dogs.
Between those two areas is a water pump station with free water for dogs to drink, along with pet blessing box. The blessing box encourages people to take what they need and leave what they can to help their fellow dog owners.
This past week the blessing box contained dog food and treats, waste bags, two dog beds, and some water/food bowls.
While the dog park does not appear to be busy during daytime hours, pet owners could be seen there in the evening when it was cooler for them and their pooches. The park allows dogs to get exercise by chasing each other or the balls and sticks thrown by their owners. It also allows the dogs and dog owners to socialize in general.

Canines Coco, left, and CeeCee play together during a visit to the new Wheeling Park Dog Park on Thursday evening.
Wheeling resident Lois Lewis brought her dog Coco to the new park. She said Coco enjoys visiting with the other dogs.
“We like it. Our dog has not been around other dogs,” she said, adding bringing him to the park is allowing him to socialize.
She added Coco was adopted from the Ohio County Animal Shelter and had been abandoned in a house before being rescued. Lewis said at home Coco wants to play fetch continuously, but noted it was funny that he didn’t want to play the game at the dog park. Coco was too busy getting to know the other dogs there to play her favorite game.
The 1.5-acre site includes two metal benches for people to use while watching their dogs. The big dog section has some large pine trees that provide some shade during hot, sunny days.
Parking is located right beside the dog park.

This is the second dog park to be constructed in the city. City Council approved a $58,794 contract with Savage Construction Co. of Wheeling to build the park.
The city’s first dog park was the Fitzsimmons Family Dog Park, which can be accessed via 18th Street in East Wheeling and by foot from Heritage Trail. This dog park is larger compared to the new one at Wheeling Park, with 1.35 acres for large dogs and 0.65 acres for smaller dogs. It includes water stations and benches, too.
Across the Ohio River, a fundraising effort is underway for the future construction of a dog park off Ohio 331, possibly behind the Belmont County Health Department. The endeavor is being spearheaded by Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas.
