CASSADAGA — Last Saturday, 52 runners and two dogs took off for the third annual Frickin’ Hot 50K.
The name truly represented the day as the temps were in the high 80s with extreme humidity and lots of sun. This race is touted as “no frills” and runners and walkers can make their way around the lower Cassadaga Lake (which is a perfect 5K distance on the roadway) once, twice, anywhere up to 10 loops to make it a 50K, or 31 miles. However, one local runner from Cassadaga, Roseanne Carr, completed her 50K and then went back out to finish the final loop of a friend giving her the title of the first person to complete a 55K.
This event is 100% a fundraiser for the Chautauqua County Fire Police.
Produced by Wilson Endurance Sports of Cassadaga, this event, along with the Frozen 50K held in February, gives runners a chance to compete in a low-pressure, fun atmosphere race.
“We say no frills,” said race director Mark Wilson, “however, we provide an aid station with Hammer Nutrition products, I grill hot dogs and we have cold refreshments provided by Southern Tier Brewing Company of Lakewood. And, best of all, they can jump in the lake to cool off, as many runners did. The Chautauqua County Fire Police provide us with an incredible service of keeping our athletes safe out on the roadways at all of our events in the county throughout the year and we wanted to do something to give back to them. This event raised $500.”
