Monsoon woes for pets: Veterinarians say untreated infection can cause lameness, skin lesions – News9 LIVE

Humidity causes fur to get moist or wet which can lead to fungal infection
Rains lashed several parts of Delhi on Sunday. The city received 13 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The relative humidity ranged between 71-97 per cent, the weather office said.
The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain and thundershowers for Monday. The rains not only bring health woes for humans, the flurry friends too get several ailments like fungal infection and flu, Dr Lakshmi Srinivasan, veterinary physician and surgeon, Animal Care Clinic, Hyderabad, told News9.
“Monsoon brings along a lot of disease-causing bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that lay mixed with the dirt on the ground. It is necessary to take them out for a walk but watch their steps. The paws are the first to get in contact with the mud, contaminated water, or any filth. Therefore, it is important to ensure that during these times, you clean their paws after returning home,” Dr Srinivasan advised.
The pads of pets are sensitive and when they walk in muddy water, there is a high chance of the pads getting infected. It is better to train your pet to wear doggie shoes from the time they are a pup.
Moisture in the air means that their fur is wet too. This can lead to bacterial or fungal or both infections. Some pets have a compromised autoimmune system. This means that they are more susceptible to infections. Hot spots are common as well during rains. If they go unnoticed and untreated, it can be dangerous. The infection can spread to other parts of the body and can lead to lameness, eye problems and skin lesions. Make sure you use a towel to dry your pets after their walks and use anti-fungal powders to keep possible infections at bay,” Dr Anil Sood of Petaids Veterinary Centre in the capital said.
Ticks and fleas are common in this season, he said. Look out for them. Remove them immediately. Tick fever is a common issue with dogs during this season. Practice regular grooming and keep their bedding clean and dry. Try and ensure that your pet doesn’t go into areas with dense plant cover. Use an anti-tick shampoo, collars and or spot-on to safeguard your furry pet from ticks and fleas,” Dr Srinivasan said.
Rains usually end up affecting the frequency and duration of the pets’ walks. This might cause problems with their digestion and bowel movement due to the irregularity of their usual routine. To ensure your dog’s health and well-being, feed them a complete and balanced diet.
“Provide them with a high fibre rich diet; it has all the essential nutrients the needs of the pet. Additionally, incorporate indoor exercises and playtime to compensate for the lack of outdoor play time to keep their metabolism high and prevent any stomach infections,” Dr Srinivasan said.
Keep an eye on their water to keep their tummy healthy. Food poisoning is common during rains due to contaminated water that the pet may drink. If your pet is non-vegetarian ensure that the meat you get is cleaned, washed and cooked properly. Undercooked meat can cause several gastric problems in the pet.
If you have been giving your dog tap water, it might be one of the reasons contributing to their stomach problems. Rains bring a lot of germs and diseases along with them which is why it is best to boil water before filling your dog’s water bowl.
“Also, frequently change the water in the pet’s bowel. Clean the bowel properly with soap and a scrub. This helps eliminate potential water-borne diseases,” Dr Srinivasan stressed.
He added that just like humans get depressed on gloomy days so do pets. The pet may show signs of anxiety and depression. Undertake a new fun activity and make sure the pet eats a nutritious diet.
