Fireworks no fun for many pets: OSPCA – The Recorder and Times

The Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre is offering tips to help keep animals calm and safe if there are fireworks nearby.

With the Civic Holiday approaching, the local Ontario SPCA is reminding the public that fireworks can frighten pets. “Unexpected loud noises and flashing lights can make our furry companions feel anxious, even cause them to flee and become lost,” a news release stated.

The Brockville-based animal centre recommends that animals be kept indoors during fireworks displays. “Startled animals might seek a place to hide and if they manage to get outside, it can be easy to lose them,” the release said. Keep dogs leashed while outside to prevent them from bolting, the OSPCA indicated. Consider walking the dog before it gets dark and the fireworks start.

Turn on the television or play quiet music in order to help drown out the noise caused by fireworks. Keep curtains and blinds closed, or place a blanket over the crate or enclosure if the animal is inside, according to the animal centre.

Resist the urge to bring dogs to fireworks displays even if the animals do not show signs of distress. “Dogs are far more sensitive to the sounds and smells produced by fireworks than we are,” the release stated.

Marianne Carlyle, manager of the local animal centre, described fireworks as “a completely foreign experience” for pets and that can come without warning and be traumatizing. “You can’t control how your neighbours choose to celebrate their holiday, but you can take steps to help ease your animals’ anxiety and ensure they have a safe and relaxing holiday, too,” Carlyle said.
