International Dog Day Is Here, And So Are These Designer Canine Collections – Forbes

They say every dog has it’s day — well, today it really is. And while everyday may feel like it’s a national holiday celebrating man’s best friend (for pet owners, at least), the National Day Calendar designated August 26th as the annual marker of the occasion.
When it comes to the happiness of their four-legged friend, pet parents can unanimously agree: Money does not exist, regardless of individual income. Most owners’ PetCo points balance can rival their airline miles. And the expenditures have stretched far beyond human-grade dog foods and pricey visits to the vet. Now, canines can be spotted wearing couture in every major city. A quick browse around a dog park in Manhattan or Los Angeles and one might swiftly notice that most dogs are outfitted better than their owners.
Petwear has come a long way since glow-in-the-dark collars and nylon leads, and so have the price tags. In May, Fendi released an inaugural line of pet travel accessories including designer bags, leads, and collars. November 2020 marked the debut of Prada’s highly-anticipated collection of re-nylon logo jackets and harnesses. Celebrity-favorite French designer Marine Serre created an exclusive capsule collection with Canadian retailer SSENSE featuring harnesses, sweaters, and a lead studded with the designer’s signautre half moon emblem. Lest no one forget Versace’s baroque print dog bed and pet robe to match their owner’s. Most heritage brands and streetwear designers have now all had a foray into canine fashion.
But dog fashion isn’t just that — it’s also function. Winterizing your pet is a necessity in colder climates. Even long or thick haired dogs need something to protect their chest and abdomen in the snow. Dog’s paws almost always need protection against sidewalks covered in salt. While designer petwear may still feel like an asinine concept to some, most dog owners can all sympathize: It’s just so adorable.
