HAL'S HEADLINES: Fire up the Q! – Winnipeg Sun

HAL'S HEADLINES: Fire up the Q! – Winnipeg Sun

It’s a big weekend for barbeque lovers in Niverville. On Saturday, the community’s arena is hosting the second of three competitions this summer that will crown the Manitoba Backyard BBQ Team of the Year. The winner of the Niverville Smokemaster BBQ also gets to go to the World Food Championships in Dallas this fall where $330,000 in prize money will be awarded. A couple dozen teams will cook up ribs and chicken, while kids will take part in a free burger competition. Grand champion pitmaster and BBQ expert Jim Johnson from Memphis is here for the event. I had a chance to talk with him on my radio show this week and I asked him for some tips. He told me if you’re using wood to smoke meat, don’t overdo it. Use smoke as though it’s a spice. Just like you don’t want too much pepper, you don’t want too much smoke. A beer garden and live bands will be a part of the day. The third and final event, the Luxe Barbeque Weekend Warrior Showdown, will happen in mid-September.

Inflation, a lack of donations and no funding have all combined to force the Animal Food Bank to suspend operations in Winnipeg. Founder Nicole Frey hopes they can be back in business in our city sooner than later but for now, over 200 pet families a month will have to look elsewhere for help. In the first half of this year, the AFB provided 75,000 meals for pets who otherwise would have gone hungry so the need is there. I urge you to do whatever you can to bring the AFB back to Winnipeg. Go to AnimalFoodBank.org and buy a 50/50 ticket. You can also get details at the site on how to donate money and food. No donation is too small, even one can of food or half a bag of kibble.

If you dare travel right now, you might want to consider a cruise. I’ve never been on a cruise ship and I doubt I’d ever give it a go (too much like a floating petri dish for me) but many travel experts are saying it’s currently your best bet. The cost of travel is really expensive these days, unless you take a cruise. Travel writer Chris Gray Faust says, “Fares on cruise ships are some of the most affordable we’ve seen in a while. You’d be hard-pressed to find a land-based travel experience that’s more affordable or convenient this summer.”

A “holy grail” blood test that can diagnose any type of cancer years before symptoms appear could be on the horizon. Researchers at University of California, Santa Cruz say they have discovered a protein released in the early stages of the disease, when tumors are more curable. A gene named KRAS produces this protein which is the most frequent mutation across all tumors. The breakthrough gives hope to a simple screening program for at-risk individuals.

Walking and then running on all fours like a dog every day can help you with aches and pains and eventually give you a ripped body. That from personal trainer Nathaniel Nolan. He’ll even do it in public. Nolan does it half an hour a day and he claims it really helps with his mobility.

Wearing clashing colours is this summer’s new fashion trend. Former British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman is giving you permission to clash with technicolour accessories. She says instead of neat pairings, colour is the name of the game this season. Vibrant accessories like purses, shoes and sunglasses have taken catwalks and storefronts by storm. Try pairing your outfit with a bright, non-matching statement piece…anything goes!
