Demand for avocados in the United States has grown substantially, with per capita consumption tripling from 2001 to 2018, according to the United State Department of Agriculture. The 2020 to 2021 marketing year saw United States avocado imports hit a “record high” of 2.675 billion pounds.
As the fruit’s popularity rises, you may be thinking about sliding some avocado over to your pup to see what they think. Before doing so, however, you should consider just how healthy and safe this fruit is for your pet.

No, dogs cannot eat avocados. While they are nutritious to humans, they contain persin, a toxin that is dangerous and potentially deadly to dogs, the American Kennel Club says. While your dog may be able to eat minimal amounts without life-threatening health risks, large amounts can cause “vomiting,” “diarrhea” and other internal gastrointestinal issues in your canine. 
To stay on the safe side, it’s best to keep the fruit away from your dog.
