The U.N. Security Council has scheduled a vote for Friday on a resolution that calls on all countries to stop the transfer of small arms, light weapons and ammunition to any party supporting gang violence and criminal activity in Haiti. Haiti has seen an upsurge in bloodshed and kidnappings. The draft by the United States and Mexico does not include an arms embargo as China sought. Other council members said an embargo would be unenforceable. The back and forth came in negotiations over a resolution to extend the mandate for the U.N. political mission in Haiti. The council’s previous authorization for the mission expires Friday.

The House is expected to vote on two bills that would restore and guarantee abortion access nationwide. It’s the Democrats’ first attempt at responding legislatively to the Supreme Court’s seismic decision overturning Roe v. Wade. The legislation coming to the floor Friday stands almost no chance of becoming law, with support lacking in the 50-50 Senate. Yet it marks the beginning of a new era in the abortion debate as lawmakers, governors and legislatures grapple with the impact of the high court’s decision. The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.
Ty France hit a two-run single in the eighth inning as the Seattle Mariners rallied from four runs down to beat the Texas Rangers 6-5 and extended their winning streak to 11 games. The win streak is the second-longest in club history and second-longest in the majors this season. The Mariners won 15 straight in 2001, the last time they qualified for the postseason. Corey Seager, added to the AL All-Star team earlier in the day, had a double and two RBI for Texas.

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 5.7 has shaken Ecuador’s coast, and authorities say a teenager was electrocuted by a fallen power line. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck Thursday at a depth of about 80 kilometers (49 miles) and was centered nearly 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the port of Guayaquil. The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador said the tremor was felt over most of country, though “weakly” in the mountains. The mayor of the Simón Bolívar canton in the coastal Guayas province says a 16-year-old was killed. He says a high voltage cable fell while the victim was engaged in “a sports activity,” but hae given no further details.

Luis Robert hit his first grand slam, Johnny Cueto pitched six strong innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 12-2 to extend their winning streak to three games. Robert’s 452-foot blast to the second deck in left field gave the White Sox a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning. He added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning and a double in the eighth for his third consecutive three-hit game. Andrew Vaughn also homered and drove in two runs for Chicago, and Tim Anderson added two hits and scored three runs. Sebby Zavala hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Twins infielder Nick Gordon. Cueto (4-4) gave up one run and seven hits over six innings while throwing a season-high 118 pitches. He pitched out of trouble in the first three innings.

Joey Votto lined a tiebreaking double in a three-run 10th inning for his second go-ahead hit of the night and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Yankees 7-6 to earn an unexpected series win. Last in the NL Central, the Reds took two of three at Yankee Stadium from the top team in the majors. They blew a sizable lead for the second consecutive night, but this time recovered and held on. Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 31st home run to start a Yankees comeback in the eighth. Gleyber Torres tied it 4-all with a two-run homer off Jeff Hoffman, costing Luis Castillo a win.

President Joe Biden will visit Palestinian leaders in the West Bank on Friday, at a moment when there’s little chance of reviving peace talks with Israel. The stalemate has dimmed hopes for a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict, and millions of Palestinians continue to live under Israeli military rule with no end in sight. Biden is expected to announce more than $300 million in aid to the Palestinians. But American money is only a limited balm for a situation that has frequently flared into violence. No one expects peace talks to begin soon, with Israel bracing for another election and the Palestinian leadership facing declining support.
