Adopt a pet for $25 or less at these Indiana animal shelters for 'Empty the Shelters' week – IndyStar
Have you been thinking about getting a pet? Now could be the perfect time to adopt that furry friend.
Bissell Pet Foundation, as part of their annual “Empty the Shelters” week, is partnering with shelters nationwide, including in Indiana, to reduce adoption fees from May 2-8.
Adoption fees at participating shelters will be $25 or less. The goal is to reduce capacity and give hundreds of pets loving homes.

“Shelters across the country are over capacity, and highly adoptable pets are at risk as we face one of the largest crises in recent years,” Cathy Bissell, founder of Bissell Pet Foundation, said in a press release.
“BISSELL Pet Foundation is calling on people to visit their community shelters during ‘Empty the Shelters’ to save a life through adoption,” Bissell said. “Without you, there is no tomorrow for these deserving pets.”
According to the press release, the “Empty the Shelters” event has helped over 83,000 pets to find homes in the U.S. and Canada since its first year in 2016.
Here are the guidelines and information for each participating shelter in Indiana, according to each agency’s website and Bissell Pet Foundation’s participating shelters guide:
IACS’ main location is at 2600 S. Harding St.
Adoptions are currently free at IACS. The organization prefers to process adoption applications day of, according to Bissell’s directory of participating shelters.

IndyHumane is located at 7929 N. Michigan Rd. Like IACS, IndyHumane largely processes adoption applications on the same day.
IndyHumane is closed on Mondays, so “Empty the Shelters” week reduced fees will begin on Tuesday, May 3. The reduced prices for “Empty the Shelters” week are $25 for adult dogs and puppies, and $10 for cats and kittens.

Humane Society of Boone County is located at 5366 S. Indianapolis Rd. in Whitestown. The shelter is offering dog and cat adoptions in partnership with “Empty the Shelters.” Adoption pre-approval is strongly encouraged. The deadline is April 29.

Bartholomew County Humane Society is located at 4415 E. 200 S. in Columbus.
The organization is strongly encouraging those who want to adopt a pet to seek pre-approval. Fill out an application online here: bit.ly/38VpU53.
Visit the Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter at 1635 W. Park Rd. in Greensburg. Cats and dogs will be available for adoption.
Pre-approval is strongly encouraged for those wishing to adopt pets. Email [email protected] to set up an appointment with an adoptable cat or dog.
Located at 1540 N. Wentzel St. in Rochester, Fulton County Animal Shelter is offering dog and cat adoptions.
Pre-approval is not required but strongly encouraged.

Both the Vanderburgh Humane Society, located at 400 Millner Industrial Drive in Evansville, and the River Kitty Cat Cafe, at 226 Main Street in Evansville, are participating in “Empty the Shelters” Week.
Pre-approval is “strongly encouraged” for both locations. The application for River Kitty pets is due by May 3. Find out more information and fill out an application at bit.ly/3rB7mxD.
Westville’s Independent Cat Society is located at 4061 S. County Line Rd. The shelter is offering cat adoptions as part of “Empty the Shelters” week.

White River Humane Society, located at 3511 Pumphouse Rd. in Bedford, requires pre-approval for adoptions, due by May 5.

SBARC is offering both cat and dog adoptions as part of “Empty the Shelters” Week. The center is located at 521 Eclipse Place in South Bend.
Pre-approval for pet adoptions is strongly encouraged and due by April 29.
