12 pets rescued by shelters from Haledon NJ home – NorthJersey.com

Two animal welfare organizations rescued 11 dogs and one cat from a Haledon home last week, the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge said Wednesday.
RBARI, an Oakland-based shelter, and the Second Chance Pet Adoption League, a foster rescue in Morris County, held a joint effort to rescue the 12 animals after their owner was found dead as a result of a welfare check, the animal shelter said in a press release.
Many of the dogs were afraid during the rescue and refused to leave their owner, the shelter said. It’s not clear how many days the owner had been dead before rescuers arrived. Six dogs and the cat, named Holly, were taken to the Oakland shelter, and the other five are at Second Chance.

“It is a daunting task to take on 12 new arrivals at once, but thanks to our rescue partnership and your dedicated support, we knew that we could transform the world for these 12 deserving animals,” RBARI Executive Director Megan Brinster said in a statement.

The dogs range between 2 and 7 years old, the shelter said, and are an assortment of Chihuahuas and Yorkshire terriers. Holly is 10 and has a heart murmur.
The shelter said the pets were all cared for by their owner, but the house is unkempt and the animals hardly left the house, which created an unsanitary environment. The animals are not housebroken or leash-trained.
In subsequent Facebook posts, the shelter said it has begun grooming the dogs, which suffered from hair matting, long nails and other sanitary issues. The shelter also said it will provide necessary medical care to the animals.
To apply to adopt one or more of the rescued pets, visit rbari.org or secondchance.petfinder.com. The dogs can be adopted in pairs, and they are used to living with other small dogs.
