Kenneth L. Jackson, 82, died June 12.
Kenneth Leon Jackson, 82, of Baldwinsville, died June 12 at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.
Jackson was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 from Jackson State University in Mississippi and a master’s degree from Rivier College in New Hampshire in 1980. He was a life member of Alpha Phi fraternity.
Jackson was a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command as a programmer during the Vietnam War.
He married his college sweetheart, Jean, in 1963.
He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2007, having worked there since 1984. In 1989, his job brought him and his family north. They settled in Baldwinsville, where they lived for 30 years.
One of Jackson’s passions in life was bowling and he belonged to numerous leagues throughout his life. He also pursued jogging, running, walking and petting dogs. He enjoyed reading political thrillers, listening to jazz and blues and watching westerns on Saturday mornings.
His son Jeffrey said this of his father: “Two things Dad always did. He would crack jokes and he would sing.” He went on to say that his father would always “work in the background to make people’s lives better.” Jackson supported many causes among them the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Department, Friends of Rosamund Gifford Zoo, The Humane Society of the USA and the United Negro College Fund.
During the Civil Rights era, he worked in voter registration drives to help black people vote.
A former co-worker posted this about Jackson: “I worked with Ken at Lockheed Martin… his sense of humor, honesty and friendship helped me…”
