If you’ve ever had to take your cat or dog to the vet, you likely understand just how pricey caring for a beloved pet can be. But being a pet parent doesn’t have to entail a cost-benefit analysis. Having dog insurance or cat insurance provides peace of mind that you can cover your pet’s vet  bills throughout its lifetime as long as your animal is eligible for coverage.
Pet insurance is a way to ensure your dog or cat receives the care it deserves without you having to empty your savings on veterinary bills. We at the Guides Home Team have compiled a list of the best pet insurance companies through extensive research, including analyzing hundreds of customer reviews, conducting consumer surveys and interviewing experts in the industry.
We have narrowed that list further to focus on those that serve Washington state.

Take a look at the best pet insurance providers in Washington:

Coverage and cost: Lemonade has a standard pet insurance policy covering accidents and illnesses for which treatments are needed. This policy covers cancer, heart disease, skin conditions, broken bones, hip dysplasia and other illnesses. However, like most pet insurance companies, Lemonade will not pay for medical costs related to any preexisting conditions, dental illnesses, behavioral issues or elective procedures.
Lemonade stands out for its affordable preventive care for puppies and kittens. For an additional $10–$16 per month, the company will partially reimburse you for helpful elective procedures such as spaying or neutering and microchip implantation. It will also help offset the cost of your new pet’s often extensive list of required wellness checks, paying for up to six shots, including three vaccines, as well as heartworm and blood tests and flea or tick prevention.
We received the following sample quotes from Lemonade for a policy in Spokane, Wash., with a $5,000 annual limit, a $250 deductible and an 80% reimbursement rate:
Lemonade is currently involved in a class-action lawsuit regarding its alleged collection and storage of biometric data. However, we still consider Lemonade to be a reputable pet insurance provider. You can read more details in our full Lemonade review.

Coverage and cost: Spot has two plan options: Accident-Only and Accident and Illness. The first covers a portion of the medical expenses related to issues like broken bones and sprains. The second plan covers all approved accidents, as well as conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hip dysplasia and behavioral issues.
Like most pet insurance providers, Spot will not reimburse you for any medical treatments or screenings related to a preexisting condition, nor will it pay for elective procedures.
Spot’s optional preventive care plan provides additional coverage for wellness-related medical care, such as one annual vet visit, one fecal test, one teeth cleaning and some vaccinations. Preventive care is available in two tiers: the Gold Plan, which includes a $250 annual limit, and the Platinum Plan, which comes with a $450 annual treatment cap. The added cost per month for these optional plans is approximately $10 and $25, respectively.
We were able to get instant online quotes for Spot’s accident-only plans covering adult mixed-breed pets in Spokane. Those quotes — based on an annual coverage cap of $2,500 at a 70% reimbursement rate and with a $250 deductible — are as follows:

Coverage and cost: Like most pet insurance companies, Embrace covers procedures related to accidents and illnesses, such as X-rays and ultrasounds. But the company also covers exam fees not typically covered by most other pet insurance companies, provided the exams are not related to any preexisting condition.
Embrace provides customers with multiple opportunities to save on their pet insurance plans. Customers who enroll more than one pet receive a 10% discount on their plans. The company also has a 5% military discount and a 10% discount for customers who work at a company enrolled in Embrace’s employee benefits program.
The company’s optional Wellness Rewards plan provides preventive care, fully reimbursing your vet costs for routine pet care treatments and procedures, such as grooming, checkups, spaying or neutering, and microchipping. Wellness Rewards is available in three annual maximums: $250, $450 and $650.
Average prices for plans that cover adult mixed-breed pets in Spokane are as follows:

Coverage and cost: ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers the Accident-Only and Complete Coverage plans. Accident-Only provides partial reimbursements for most medical care related to accidental injuries and emergencies such as torn ligaments, broken bones, animal bite wounds and cuts. Complete Coverage expands the Accident-Only plan to include illnesses and conditions like hip dysplasia, heart disease and behavioral disorders.
ASPCA has two optional preventive care packages. At just under $10 per month, Preventative Basic provides up to $100 each for wellness-related vet visits, including heartworm and fecal tests, rabies vaccination and dental cleaning, for an annual coverage limit of $250. Preventative Prime is approximately $25 per month and has an annual cap of $450. The Prime plan covers some items not included in the Basic plan, such as flea or heartworm prevention, urinalysis and a blood test.

Coverage and cost: While most pet insurance providers offer multiple tiered-coverage plans, Healthy Paws has only one that covers accidents and illnesses. However, that plan comes with unlimited coverage for treatments, surgeries, medications and other medical expenses.
Healthy Paws does not give customers optional wellness benefits, and the company is limited in its coverage of hip dysplasia. Pets that are 6 years or older can’t receive hip dysplasia coverage even if it’s not a preexisting condition. Younger pets can qualify for hip dysplasia coverage through a veterinary exam after 12 months. Healthy Paws also limits its reimbursement level for older dogs and cats (at least 8 years old) to 60%.
The average price range for Healthy Paws coverage of adult mixed-breed pets under 6 years old with a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement rate in Spokane are as follows:

Coverage and cost: Figo provides coverage through three plans: Essential, Preferred and Ultimate. All plan options cover medical expenses related to new illnesses and accidents, including diagnostic tests, prescription medications, surgeries and emergency services. Chronic and congenital or hereditary conditions are also included, and Figo will provide knee and hip dysplasia coverage six months after the start of your policy. The difference in these policies is the annual coverage cap. Essential has a $5,000 limit, and Preferred comes with a $10,000 limit. The Ultimate Plan does not have a coverage cap.
Optional add-on plans cover wellness-related care like prescription food and routine veterinary exams. For example, the Extra Care Pack will reimburse you up to $250 for the cremation and burial of your pet should it pass away. It also offsets the cost of lost-pet advertising and reward — if your pet runs away or is stolen, the Extra Care Pack will pay you up to $150.
Figo’s Pet Cloud app features virtual vet visits 24/7 in an emergency. The app also provides reminders about ongoing medical care, such as re-vaccination for rabies, and information about pet-friendly parks, trails and restaurants in your area.

While the best pet insurance company for you will ultimately depend on where you live and your pet’s age, size and current health, we recommend Lemonade overall for its affordable rates, comprehensive coverage options and wellness plan for puppies and kittens. Spot or Figo may be good options if you have an older animal since they don’t exclude pets based on age.
Pet insurance coverage and prices vary by company, so it’s best to get quotes from at least three providers and carefully review sample plans before making your decision. Make sure you know which services are most important to you and how much you want to spend every month on a pet insurance policy. Also, remember that most pet insurance companies exclude preexisting conditions from coverage.

Although plan specifics vary by company, typically three coverage levels are available:

If you have decided pet insurance is a smart option for your wallet, the next step is selecting the provider that best meets your pet’s individual needs. While reviewing companies, keep these few key factors in mind:

Pet insurance differs from human health insurance in that there is no comparable open enrollment period, meaning you can purchase a plan at any time. However, waiting to buy coverage until a pet with a preexisting condition needs medical treatment may not be a viable option. Most pet insurance providers have long and detailed lists of exclusions related to preexisting conditions, and your claims, therefore, may be denied.
Depending on how comprehensive you want your coverage to be, plans can range from as little as $10 per month to more than $100. However, the average cost for pet owners is about $40 per month. Remember that cost ultimately depends largely on your pet’s age and breed.
Pet insurance is a helpful tool for preventing exorbitant medical fees for your dog or cat, particularly when the unexpected happens. The only alternative to pet insurance is to put money away specifically for your pet, including for accidents. However, since it can be challenging to plan for the unexpected or estimate the costs of various pet procedures and surgeries, pet insurance provides a more dependable way to cover your pet at a set monthly rate.

Our review of pet insurance companies is based on in-depth industry research that includes reading hundreds of customer reviews, simulating the quote and purchasing process, speaking to representatives on the phone to assess the customer service experience and surveying 1,000 dog and cat owners nationwide to determine the most important elements of pet insurance coverage.
