Several lawsuits in Illinois accuse gun-maker Smith & Wesson of illegally targeting young men at risk of violence with ads for firearms. Lawsuits filed Wednesday cite the 22-year-old gunman accused of opening fire on a July Fourth parade in suburban Chicago and killing seven people. The lawsuits are the latest bid by victims of mass shootings to hold gun manufacturers legally accountable. One survivor who is among those filing lawsuits in Lake County is Liz Turnipseed. She says she is determined to speak for those who did not survive mass shootings in the United States. Smith & Wesson is based in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Flag football is rising in popularity, especially among girls. Interest has picked up in youth leagues and also following a push by NFL teams to help start teams for high schoolers. Now, officials in the southern section of the California Interscholastic Federation are expected to vote on making flag football an official girls’ high school sport. State interscholastic sport officials could soon follow. Football enthusiasts say the move could lead more schools to start more teams and give girls more opportunities to play the sport. In Southern California, some high schoolers are gearing up for their second season in a pilot league started by the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams.

Three other scientists were recognized for their work on key immune proteins.
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are searching for a man they describe as “armed and dangerous” in connection with the slaying of PnB Rock, who was shot and killed two weeks ago at Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles in South L.A.
The U.S. will provide an additional $1.1 billion in aid to Ukraine, with funding for about 18 more advanced rocket systems and other weapons to counter drones that Russia has been using against Ukrainian troops. That is according to U.S. officials who provided details of the package on condition of anonymity because it has not yet been made public. The latest package is being provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which funds contracts to purchase weapons and equipment. And it brings the total of U.S. aid to Ukraine to nearly $17 billion since the Biden administration took office.
Los Angeles police have named the suspect in the fatal shooting of rapper PnB Rock and warned he should be considered armed and dangerous. The Philadelphia artist, whose real name is Rakim Allen, was gunned down Sept. 13 at a South LA restaurant while eating with his girlfriend. Investigators say a robber approached their table and demanded items from the rapper. The suspect was identified Wednesday as Freddie Lee Trone. Police released a photo of Trone but provided no additional details about him.
“Bros,” the first gay rom-com produced and distributed by a major American studio, hews very closely to the classic rom-com formula, Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy writes that’s the genius of “Bros” — telling LGBTQ stories and wrapping it in a familiar storyline that everyone can relate to. Billy Eichner stars and co-wrote a story of a slightly nerdy man looking for love from an attractive opposite. It’s not a perfect film but it has what the best have: heart, good faith and good old fashioned love. The R-rated “Bros” opens in theaters Friday.
Britain’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss is under pressure to reverse announced tax cuts that have triggered a financial crisis in an already struggling economy. Demands are coming not just from the opposition, but from members of the governing Conservative Party. Conservative lawmakers watched with mounting alarm as the pound sank to record lows, and the bank of England stepped in on Wednesday to stabilize U.K. financial markets. One Conservative lawmaker tweeted: “This inept madness cannot go on,” while another said he had “serious reservations” about the government’s plans. Opposition parties want Parliament called back early from a two-week break to confront the crisis. So far, Truss is sticking to her guns.
Conservationists say 15 Griffon vultures from Spain have been released into the wild in Cyprus to help revive the island population that’s dropped to just 8-10 birds because of deliberate poisoning. The LIFE with Vultures CY group said Wednesday the birds were initially brought to the east Mediterranean island nation nearly a year ago and stayed in a specially constructed cage to get acclimatized to local conditions before their release. Cyprus’ Game and Fauna Service has attached GPS transmitters to all the vultures to monitor their movements and well-being. From previous releases of vultures elsewhere in Europe, it’s expected that the birds will intermingle with the remaining indigenous vulture population at feeding and roosting locations.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has made a campaign promise to repeal the state’s tax on groceries. Wednesday’s announcement is a change of course after she did not support a bipartisan proposal to cut the tax in March. The Republican governor made the announcement two days ahead of a Friday debate with her Democratic challenger, Rep. Jamie Smith. He has pushed the repeal of the 4.5% tax on groceries for years and helped broker a bipartisan vote to pass it in the House this year. Noem says her promise would push $100 million “directly to families to help them with their budget.”

An Oklahoma prosecutor is recovering at his home after police say he was stabbed by his adult daughter. Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler says in a statement that he was allowed to go home to recover following the Tuesday afternoon stabbing. Police Chief Wendell Franklin says Kunzweiler’s daughter, 30-year-old Jennifer Kunzweiler, was arrested following the stabbing. Kunzweiler’s stabbing is the third time in recent years that an elected official in Oklahoma was stabbed by a family member. Lebanon will hike its fixed currency exchange rate against the U.S. dollar 25 years after adopting it. The Finance Ministry said Wednesday the official rate of the Lebanese pound against the dollar will increase from just over 1,500 to 15,000 in November. The country’s economy has been spiraling downward since October 2019, and the Lebanese pound has lost 90% of its value against the dollar. The country has since adopted several exchange rates and the market has relied on an opaque parallel rate. The government is scrambling to unify its exchange rates and reach a deal with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout program.
A federal judge has barred Indiana from enforcing a 2016 law’s provisions that require abortion clinics to either bury or cremate fetal remains, finding that they violate the U.S. Constitution. U.S. District Judge Richard L. Young ruled Monday that the law’s requirements infringe on the religious and free speech rights of people who do not believe aborted fetuses deserve the same treatment as deceased people. The Indianapolis Star reports that Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita says his office will appeal the ruling. The law containing the provisions was signed in 2016 by then-Gov. Mike Pence, before he became vice president.

The Biden administration should create a new position at the White House National Security Council to focus on cases of Americans wrongfully detained in foreign countries. That’s according to a report from an advocacy group, which recommends funding an interagency office to help free hostages. The report from the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation also recommends that Congress authorize funds to pay for hostage families to visit Washington to meet with government officials. Foley, a freelance journalist, was among a group of Westerners murdered in Islamic State captivity in Syria in 2014. The report as the U.S. is trying to get Russia to release WNBA star Brittney Griner and American Paul Whelan.

Kristoffer Böttzauw, head of the Danish Energy Agency, said the emissions from the three gas leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 correspond to approximately 32% of annual Danish CO2 emissions. The Danish emissions in 2020 were of approximately 45 million tonnes of CO2.
Democratic Gov. Tim Walz has $3.2 million in cash on hand heading into the final weeks of the campaign, while Republican challenger Scott Jensen has $916,000 left in the bank. The Jensen campaign says it raised $1.8 million in the two-month reporting before Tuesday’s filing deadline to bring its total for the campaign cycle to $4.2 million. The campaign says that’s a new record for a Minnesota GOP gubernatorial candidate, beating the $3.3 million that then-Gov. Tim Pawlenty raised for his 2006 campaign. The Walz campaign says it raised $1.73 million in the same period for a grand total of $4.4 million.
Zach Wilson will start at quarterback for the New York Jets at Pittsburgh on Sunday, six weeks after having knee surgery. Coach Robert Saleh announced the decision Wednesday to have the second-year QB make his season debut. Wilson had been ramping up workouts in recent weeks, but Saleh said Monday the Jets were waiting for the quarterback’s doctors to clear him before making a decision about this week. Wilson suffered a bone bruise in the preseason opener against Philadelphia on Aug. 12 and needed arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Joe Flacco started the first three games of the season, during which the Jets went 1-2.

Officials say 11 children and two adult drivers were injured when a semitrailer truck collided with a school bus in southwestern Nebraska. The Chase County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened Tuesday afternoon on a rural highway near Champion. A bus dropping off children from school turned left in front of a semi loaded with grain. The crash caused bus to spin and tip on its side, and the truck was forced into a ditch. Investigators say 11 children ages 6 to 15 were on the bus and were taken to the Chase County hospital “with a wide range of injuries.”

Researchers in China have found a major catch of fish fossils, including the oldest teeth from any species. The scientists describe some of the fossils, which are more than 400 million years old, in a series of studies published Wednesday. Researchers say the fossils can help us understand how ancient creatures evolved their jaws and teeth. When fish got their bite, it was a big moment for evolution and set our ancestors on a new path. But fossils showing this transition are rare. The discoveries in China include new fish species and the oldest teeth ever, which can help fill in the gaps in the fossil record.
A French Senate delegation says sexual and physical abuse in France’s porn industry is “systemic” and lawmakers should better regulate the production of violent videos. The report released on Wednesday was the first prepared for the French parliament to focus on the porn industry. The authors wrote that the violent acts depicted in pornographic films “are not simulated but very real for the women who are being filmed.” They recommended fines and age-verification mechanisms to address the “massive, ordinary and toxic” viewing of porn by children. Dozens of alleged victims have come forward in two separate police investigations linked to a major video platform and France’s leading amateur porn site.
President Joe Biden is warning the oil and gas companies against increasing prices for consumers as Hurricane Ian nears landfall along Florida’s southwest coast. Biden’s message to the industry is: “Do not, let me repeat, do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people.” Biden says the hurricane “provides no excuse for price increases at the pump” and if it happens, he’ll ask federal officials to determine ”whether price gauging is going on.” The president is putting companies on notice: “America is watching. The industry should do the right thing,.”
The founder of the Oath Keepers and four associates are on trial in the U.S. Capitol attack on charges that include seditious conspiracy — a rare Civil War-era charge that strikes to the heart of what prosecutors say happened that day. Stewart Rhodes and his followers are the first Jan. 6 defendants to stand trial on such charges for what prosecutors have described as a violent plot to stop the transfer of presidential power. Jury selection began on Tuesday for a trial that is expected to last several weeks.

The 20-year-old Williams came off the bench to assist Álvaro Morata’s 88th-minute winner in a victory over Portugal that guaranteed Spain a spot in the Nations League’s Final Four on Tuesday. And that may have also guaranteed him a place in Qatar despite only two appearances with the national team. His performances prompted widespread praise and left him in position to be picked by Spain coach Luis Enrique for Qatar.
